Anna Shumanskaia was born on the 31st of May, 1974 in Pyatigorks, Russia in the family of teachers, artists and actors. The beauty of her region, surrounded by the Caucasus Mountains, the paintings of her father and her grand-father as well as performing of her grand-parents on stage plunged her childhood into an artistic atmosphere that influences her life perception and creations.
Having acquired her Master’s Degree in Linguistics in Russia, she also studied photography at “Photoplay”, Moscow. In 2015 she moved to Paris, where she learned French and got her Master’s Degree in Photography at Spéos (Paris Photographic Institute).
Since that time she has been participating in numerous individual and collective exhibitions in France, Greece, Russia, etc. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and emblematic venues in Paris (Grand Palais, Palais de Tokyo, Carrousel du Louvre), as well as in Moscow, Santorini and at the Voies Off festival in Arles.
In April 2018 she published her photo book Personalized Dress Code both in English and French (registered at BNF - National Library of France).
In 2021, her second book, Portraits in Lockdown is published. It features the result of the 67 distance photoshoots, made during the lockdown period in France in 2020.
Between Present and Past is not simply her third photo book, published in 2023, but also the voyage to her artistic roots in Siberia.
Identity is one of her principal values. She looks for and expresses it in her photographs, such as in her portraits of the people wearing potatoe sacks, naked bodies, emerging from water, or those painted in their emotions.
